One man is in hospital after being shot while inside a downtown Vancouver coffee shop Tuesday evening.

The man was drinking coffee at the Tim Hortons on Davie at Howe street around 7:30 p.m. when a masked gunman entered the establishment and fired several shots at him, said Vancouver police Sgt. Dan O'Donovan.

The gunman then escaped out the rear of the restaurant. Some witnesses say he fled on foot, while others say he took off in a vehicle.

The victim then managed to seek help at a Vancouver community policing office on Granville Street. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.

As of one hour later, the area of Granville and Howe was still cordoned off by police as they canvassed the scene for clues. Patrons who were inside the Tim Hortons at the time of the shooting stood around outside, completing their witness statements.

At this very early stage in the investigation, police do not have any suspect descriptions, nor do they know his motivation.

"It appeared to be targeted, in that no one else was injured," Donovan said.
